Turn Your Succession Plan Into a Transition Your Clients Can Trust
Hold the Reins, Share the Ride® is a succession strategy and implementation plan for founders, successors, and advisory teams, led by a retired Morgan Stanley Managing Director with 42 years in wealth management.
Your practice represents the work of a career. How you transition it will shape your legacy, protect client relationships, and determine whether the next generation is prepared to lead.

Who Are These Engagements For?
-
Founders working through succession planning on your own and need an outside perspective before you name a successor.
-
Founders and successors who have a successor identified and need a structured way to formalize roles, timelines, and client transition.
-
Leadership teams planning for the future of the practice.
-
Firms who want to offer succession planning coaching as a benefit across multiple advisors or teams.
Even the Best-Looking Plans Rest on Untested Assumptions
Even thoughtful succession plans stall when the assumptions underneath them have not been tested. Founders may not have defined what stepping back actually means. Successors may not have developed sufficient authority, readiness, or client visibility. Team members may appear aligned while holding different views of the future.
Lisa helps teams surface those issues early and turn them into decisions, milestones, and an executable transition plan.
Lisa's 42 years as an advisor and field leader allow her to recognize familiar patterns, get beneath the presenting issue, and reach the central one quickly. People are candid with her because she has worked through these exact situations and understands both the business stakes and the personal dynamics.

The Hold the Reins, Share the Ride® Process
Lisa's signature Hold the Reins, Share the Ride® process reframes succession as a transfer of trust, not simply ownership. Legal agreements can transfer equity. They cannot transfer a client's confidence in the next generation. That confidence must be built while the senior advisor is still present to demonstrate trust in the successor.
“Clients should experience the succession before they are ever asked to accept it.”
— Lisa Cregan

CASE STUDY
The Succession Plan Looked Complete. Then We Pressure-Tested It.
How a focused two-day engagement with Lisa Cregan and a founder-led wealth management team exposed hidden assumptions, aligned the team on a new strategy, and turned a succession plan into a growth strategy.
THE CLIENT
A founder-led wealth management firm with a 20-person team and a multigenerational client base built over decades.
THE ENGAGEMENT
A two-day on-site succession planning and implementation engagement, with discovery interviews, one-on-one coaching, and facilitated working sessions.
THE FOCUS
Succession strategy, leadership transition, team structure, client segmentation, and client communication.

The Situation
On paper, this firm was ahead of the curve. The founder had named a successor, set a five-year retirement horizon, and segmented the client base from Platinum to Bronze. But a succession plan is only as strong as the assumptions underneath it, and after hearing Lisa speak at a conference, several team members realized the plan they thought was complete was missing key elements.
What We Uncovered
-
A different definition of retirement. The founder wanted to step away from daily client responsibilities, not leave the firm — a very different transition to plan for.
-
A different leadership model. Rather than replacing the founder in the same role, the successor wanted a shared, horizontal leadership structure.
-
Segmentation without a service model. Clients were tiered Platinum to Bronze, but the service model hadn't been redesigned around those tiers, so lower-complexity relationships were consuming senior advisor capacity.
-
Trust transfer needed a repeatable process. Using the Hold the Reins® workbook, Lisa helped the firm map a client-by-client transition process with sequencing and milestones.
-
An untapped client resource. The firm's life-transitions navigator was a distinctive capability that wasn't yet connected to business development.
What the Firm Left With
-
A transition strategy truly aligned with the founder's intentions and the successor's leadership vision.
-
A team-led structure with clear, agreed-upon responsibility for developing the next generation.
-
Service-model priorities designed to create greater advisor capacity.
-
A repeatable framework for transferring client trust using the Hold the Reins® process.
-
Consistent client communication conveying confidence, continuity, and team depth.
